May beauty products na nagsasabing paraben-free ang mga ito at kung anu-ano pang symbols na kini-claim nila para sa safety ng gumagamit at ng kapaligiran.
Kapag nakita natin ang “paraben free” at iba pang claims, naiintindihan ba natin ito? Dapat ba tayong maging concerned dito?
PARABEN FREE
Ang parabens ay mga petrochemicals na ginagamit sa halos lahat ng cosmetics products dahil sa wide-ranging ability nito na pumatay ng bacteria kaya naman napepreserba rin mismo ang mga produkto.
May health effects ang parabens at maaaring iba-iba ito mula sa: Endocrine disruption: ang parabens ay kayang gayahin ang estrogen action at maaaring makaapekto o maka-delay sa sexual development at reproduction. Sa parabens din ay maaaring maging common ang allergic reaction.
REEF SAFE
May certain ingredients na kadalasang makikita sa mga sunscreen na nagiging sanhi ng irreparable damage sa coral reefs sa buong mundo. Ayon sa pag-aaral, “Four to six thousand tons of sunscreen wash off swimmers each year, and studies have shown synthetic chemicals carried by the waves are destroying algae and other marine life within the reefs.”
Ang isang casualty ng kasagsagan ng chemical na ito ay ang zooxanthellae, ang algae na nagbibigay sa coral ng vibrant color at nagbibigay din sa reefs ng essential nutrients. Sabi pa sa pag-aaral, “Without these algae hosts, the reefs lose their colour, are bleached white, and quickly die.”
SULFATE (SULPHATE) FREE
Ang sodium laureth o lauryl sulphate (SLES/SLS) ay mga ginagamit para mawala o matanggal ang grease sa buhok at nagiging daan upang kumalat ang shampoo at mag-penetrate ito. Madali itong nakapapasok sa balat at nananatili sa tissues (partikular sa utak, puso at liver tissues) sa mahabang panahon.
Ang SLES/SLS ay 90 porsyentong ginagamit sa lahat ng commercial shampoos. Ibinabawal ang SLS sa bubble bath dahil may adverse effects ito sa skin protection at nagiging sanhi ng rashes at irritation. Ito ay may multitude of negative health effects mula sa built up sa lymphs, na may kaugnayan sa cancer, eye damage, endocrine disruption, hair loss at dry skin.
NO SILICONE
Dapat iwasan ang silicone ingredient sa beauty products gaya ng makeup o hair products dahil nakakabara ito sa pores at naiiwasan ang natural sweating ng balat. May nagsasabing safe ang silicone sa tao dahil sa low hazard nito. Pero ayon sa pag-aaral, may uri ng silicones (siloxanes) na masama naman sa kapaligiran.
Ngunit kahit ganito na ang obserbasyon, bakit mayroon pa rin nito sa products?
Mura kasi ang silicones kaya mas concerned ito ng beauty companies kumpara sa gagamit nito. Paliwanag ng pag-aaral, “They’d rather use cheap, manmade plastics as fillers than formulate with more expensive raw materials that may have a shorter shelf life.” Pero kahit sa mahal na uri ng products ay mayroon din nito.
NO PVP
Ang NO PLASTIC POLYMERS (PVP/Acrylates) na claims ng companies sa kanilang mga produkto ay nagsasabing okay itong gamitin.
Ang PVP ay nagbibigay sa products ng extra fixative power na ayon sa pag-aaral, “it forms a thin coating over the hair that helps to maintain it in the position you wish.”
SCENT FREE
Ang scents na tinutukoy dito ay ang odor at smell mula sa ingredients ng chemicals sa cosmetic (perfume, make-up, shampoo, deodorant, etc.) o mula sa iba pang products tulad ng air fresheners, cleaners, at iba pa.
Kung tutuusin walang definite definition sa scent-free, fragrance-free o unscented. Ayon sa mga dermatologist, “Products labelled as unscented may actually contain ingredients that are used to mask or hide the smell of other ingredients.”
Nakakaepekto ba sa kalusugan ang mga pabango sa beauty products? Depende minsan ito sa tao lalo kung iritable o sa malalang kaso ay may allergy siya na naaamoy sa isang certain product. Ang ilan sa mga masamang epekto nito ay ang mga sumusunod:

PHTHALATE FREE
Ang Phthalate, ay isang family of industrial chemicals na ginagamit para mapalambot ang PVC plastic at bilang solvents sa cosmetics at iba pang consumer products. Madalas itong makita sa bahay, sa plastic toys, personal care products, vinyl floors, and shower curtains. Ang masamang epekto nito ay maaari itong makasira sa liver, kidneys, lungs, atreproductive system — partikular sa pag-develop sa mga test – ayon sa animal studies.
Ang phthalates sa cosmetic at personal care products ay dapat ding bigyang konsiderasyon. Ang ingredient na ito ay napaka-common sa mga produktong para sa infants o toddlers katulad ng shampooes, at lotions. Nakaaalarma ito dahil bata pa ang gagamit at sila ang most vulnerable to harm.
Kung tutuusin kahit ang inang buntis ay maaari nang maapektuhan ng phthalates na tinatawag na “endocrine disruptors” dahil naaapektuhan nito ang body’s hormones by mimicking them or blocking them. Dini-delay nito ang galaw ng katawan sa natural levels of estrogen, testosterone, at iba pang hormones, kaya tinatawag itong “disruptors.”
