SIBUYAS BANTAY-SARADO SA MERKADO, PANTALAN

ALINSUNOD sa direktiba ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos, Jr., bantay-sarado na sa mga alistong operatiba ng Bureau of Customs (BOC) – sa pakikipagtulungan ng Department of Agriculture (DA) – ang anomang tangkang pagpupuslit ng sibuyas sa mga pantalan pinangangasiwaan ng kawanihan.

Ayon sa BOC, maging ang mga pamilihang bayan kung saan karaniwang bumabagsak ang mga smuggled onion, minamat­yagan na rin anila ng pamahalaan mula pa noong buwan ng Hulyo.
Samantala, sinabi naman ni Assistant Secretary Kristine Evangelista na tumatayong tagapagsalita ng DA na patuloy pa rin ang isinasagawang imbestigasyon ng kanilang Bureau of Plant Industries (BPI) kaugnay ng mga ulat hinggil sa lantarang bentahan ng mga smuggled na sibuyas sa mga talipapa.

“There are no importation permits, so how did they get to the retailer? That is one thing. The BPI is also working closely with the BOC. The BOC is in charge of commodities entering the country,” ani Evangelista.

Nagbabala rin ang nabanggit na opisyal laban sa mga tumatangkilik ng mga smuggled na produkto sa merkado.

“When the product is smuggled, it does not go through food safety protocols. Consumers cannot be sure that it is safe. So, the regulatory body also comes into it,” pangamba ni Evangelista.

“It’s not only the retailer who is liable. What’s important is to find out who their supplier is and how much volume does that supplier have. There we will see who dictates the release of the commodity and how much,” dagdag pa niya.

Kamakailan lang, kumpis­kado sa ikinasang inspeksyon sa Malabon Central Market at Divisoria ang nasa 47 sako ng sibuyas na binebenta sa merkado sa presyong P500 kada kilo.

“Our regulatory partners which are local government units (LGUs) and regulatory agencies… do not immediately give penalties. We issue a letter of inquiry about where the onions come from,” pahabol pa ni Evangelista.
