IGINIIT ni Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol na maituturing na death trap ang suhestiyon ni Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno na iwanan na ng mga magsasaka ang pagtatanim ng palay at sa halip ay mga high value crops gaya ng abaca, cacao, cassava, coffee, oil palm at rubber ang itanim.
Ayon kay Pinol hindi maaring iasa na lahat sa importasyon ang pangangailangan ng bansa sa bigas.
“It is as certain as the sun will rise tomorrow that 10 years from now, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Pakistan and India will no longer be able to export the same volume of rice that they ship out today. They have to feed their growing population as well.The policy to just rely on imported rice and ask our rice farmers to diversify to other crops is a death trap.
Papatayin din umano ang rice industry kung susundin ng gobyerno ang kagustuhan ni Diokno.
“It is a shortsighted view which will kill the rice industry and drive away farmers from the rice fields,” paliwanag ni Pinol.
Katwiran ni Diokno sa halip na bigas ay mga crops na malaki ang potensyal sa export market ang syang tutukan na itanim ng mga magsasaka.
