AABOT sa 104 whale shark ang naispatang lumalangoy sa Ticao Pass sa Donsol, Sorsogon, simula Enero hanggang Hunyo, iniulat ng World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines.

“The addition of these new sightings puts the total number of whale shark individuals spotted in Donsol at 676 since the monitoring began in 2007,” ayon WWF.

Itinuturing na endangered ang mga whale shark (Whale shark (Rhincodon typus) base sa Red List of Threatened Species ng International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), dagdag ulat ng WWF.

“Very young whale shark juveniles were also identified among the 168 individuals that were spotted. Their presence suggests that the Ticao Pass may be a pupping ground for whale sharks, further increasing the ecological significance of the area,” pahayag pa grupo.

Katuwang ang pamahalaan ng Donsol, itinataguyod ng WWF-Philippines ang programang ‘Sharks: Restoring the Balance’ upang mapanatili ang dami ng mga whale shark sa lugar para sa turismo.
