Boracay Water has successfully expanded its sewer network coverage in Barangay Balabag and portions of Yapak in Boracay Island, Aklan to meet the increasing wastewater management needs driven by continuous developments in these areas, under the Yapak Bypass Project.

This initiative reinforces Boracay Water’s commitment to environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance. The project adheres to the Republic Act 9275 or the Philippine Clean Water Act and the Presidential Decree No. 856 or the Sanitation Code of the Philippines and supports the Local Government of Malay’s Municipal Ordinance No. 550, which mandates sewer connection within 100 meters of an available sewer network.

As a result of this expansion, sewer coverage on Boracay Island increased from 61% to 67%, significantly improving the volume of wastewater treated. Also, through Boracay Water’s free sewer connection program Project Monsoon, 230 households or accounts, representing approximately 1,150 individuals, have connected to the sewer system, ensuring proper wastewater disposal and treatment.

This initiative reinforces Boracay Water’s commitment to environmental sustainability and regulatory compliance.

The project also enabled Boracay Water to accommodate wastewater flows from Yapak and Balabag, achieving a remarkable 493% increase in connected accounts, from 30 accounts in December 2024 to 178 in October 2025. This milestone underscores Boracay Water’s dedication to supporting sustainable tourism and safeguarding the island’s natural resources.

“Boracay Water remains steadfast in its mission to provide effective water and wastewater services while protecting the island’s natural beauty and ensure long-term sustainability,” said Joanna Intas, Acting General Manager of Boracay Water.

“By expanding our sewer network, we not only help maintain the pristine condition of Boracay for tourism but also provide customers with the assurance that their wastewater is properly treated in our sewer treatment plants. This means cleaner surroundings, improved public health, and a safer environment for residents and visitors alike,” she added.

Boracay Water is an operating unit of Manila Water Non-East Zone subsidiary Manila Water Philippine Ventures and a concessionaire of the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA).
