“My mother, Senator Cynthia Villar, is the chairman of the Committee on Agriculture. Mayroon actually siyang suggestion or mayroon siyang ginagawang panukalang batas, in particular to support the poultry and livestock industry because of the effects of ASF (African Swine Fever),” ani Camille.
“One of the things that she was advocating for as early as two years ago was a first border facility kung saan lahat po dapat na mga baboy na dumadating sa Pilipinas ay dinadala sa facility, doon tine-test bago po sila papasok,” aniya pa.
She noted that delays in implementing this facility have allowed ASF to spread in the country, causing significant losses to the livestock sector.
“Again, it is the implementation of our laws. And with regard to helping other industries, of course, we should give financial support to our farmers, first and foremost,” she emphasized.
She also lamented the aging farmer population, with an average age of 56, as a critical issue that should be addressed through education and awareness campaigns to encourage younger generations to pursue farming.
(Danny Bacolod)
