KAABANG-ABANG ang 147-pound unification bout sa pagitan nina eight division champion Manny Pacquiao at undefeated Errol Spence Jr. sa Agosto 21 sa T-Mobile Arena sa Las Vegas.
Ito ay dahil ang magwawagi sa pagitan nila ay magiging unang The Ring magazine’s welterweight champion sapul noong 2015, nang huling igawad ito kay Floyd Mayweather, Jr.
Ang iba pang nagkamit ng prestihiyosong titulo ay sina boxing all-time great Henry Armstrong, Sugar Ray Robinson, Sugar Ray Leonard at Roberto Duran.
Hindi naging madali ang desisyon na itaya ang naturang titulo dahil si Spence ang Ring’s No. 1 rated welterweight habang si Pacquiao ay nasa No. 3. Ang bakanteng titulo ay itinataya lamang sa pagitan ng No. 1 at No. 2.
Subalit dahil sa malabo nang mangyari ang salpukan nina Spence at three-weight world titleholder Terence Crawford (Ring’s No. 2), kaya nagdesisyon ang The Ring na itaya ang titulo sa Spence-Pacquiao fight.
“Our own championship policy stipulates the following: “If a fight between the No. 1 and 2 contenders cannot be made and No. 1 fights No. 3, the winner may be awarded The Ring belt if the Editorial Board deems the No. 3 contender worthy.”
“All three members of the editorial board voted and all three agreed that Pacquiao-Spence qualifies,” pahayag ng The Ring.
Isinaalang-alang din ng board ang katayuan ng Pambansang Kamao bilang isa sa mga pinaka-magagaling na boksingero sa kasaysayan ng sports.
“Pacquiao is an all-time great who has consistently faced the best in a multitude of divisions for two decades. Spence is one of the finest pound-for-pound fighters in the world today and his talents are beyond reproach. It’s an excellent fight that is eagerly anticipated the world over. May the best man win.”
Sakaling magwagi ang 42-anyos na si Pacquiao na may record na 62-7-2 at 39 knockouts, uukit siya ng panibagong kasaysayan bilang Ring magazine champ sa 126, 130, 140, at 147 divisions.
Ngunit inaasahang hindi ito magiging madali dahil ang 31-anyos na si Spence ay wala pang talo sa 27 fights kung saan may 21 knockouts siya. (ANN ENCARNACION)
