ITINUTURING ng isang mambabatas sa Kamara na “good move” ang desisyon ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na palawigin pa ng anim na buwan ang pagbasura ng gobyerno sa Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) sa Estados Unidos.
“I think it is a good move for the government to extend the suspension to give time for the new US administration to settle in and possibly pursue talks with the Philippines on issues concerning the VFA,” ani House defense and security committee vice chairman Ruffy Biazon.
Ayon sa mambabatas, magkakaroon ng bagong administrasyon ang Amerika sa Enero 20, 2021 matapos manalo si Democrat presidential candidate Joseph “Joe” Biden laban sa Republican na si Donald Trump sa katatapos na eleksyon sa Amerika.
Magandang pagkakataon at oportunidad aniya ito ng Pilipinas para pag-usapan muli ng dalawang bansa ang nasabing tratado na kapwa mahalaga sa dalawang bansa sa usapin ng seguridad.
“The impending change in administration in the US offers the Philippines an opportunity to engage the new administration and discuss concerns pertaining to the PH-US relationship and come to a refresh or reboot of security arrangements in the Region,” ani Biazon.
Magugunita na noong Pebrero 2020 ay iniutos ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ang pagbasura sa VFA matapos suspendehin ng Amerika ang US Visa ni Sen. Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa.
Gayunpaman, bago naipatupad ang termination ng VFA ay pinalawig ito ni Duterte hanggang Disyembre 1, 2020 subalit inanunsyo ni Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Teddy Boy Locsin na muling pinalawig ng Pilipinas ang VFA Abrogation ng panibagong 6 na buwan. (BERNARD TAGUINOD)
