ISINUSULONG ni Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto ang panukala na magpapaigting ng proteksyon, seguridad at magbibigay benepisyo sa media workers bilang pagkilala sa kanilang papel sa komunidad.

“At times when reliable and accurate information is crucial, such as today amid the menacing health impacts of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, media workers have set aside all fear and reason and have gone the extra mile to gather facts and figures to make the public fully aware of what is happening in their government and communities,” saad ni Sotto.

Ipinaliwanag ni Sotto na ang Senate Bill 1820 o ang proposed Media Workers’ Welfare Act ay magbibigay ng komprehensibong benepisyo sa media workers na kahalintulad ng natatanggap ng ibang labor force.

Sinabi ng senador na maraming naisasakripisyo ang mga emdia workers para sa pagseserbisyo sa publiko at mas maraming oras ang kanilang ginugugol sa kanilang trabaho kaya’t panahon na upang bigyan din sila ng “safe and protected atmosphere”

“The media has even gone beyond their duty of news gathering. They have become the voice of the marginalized and the scared.

They bridge and connect the people and their public leaders. Napakalaki ng papel na nilalaro ng ating mga reporter, ang kanilang mga cameramen at ang lahat ng bumubuo ng media industry sa ating pamayanan.

Sapat lamang na pagtuunan sila ng pansin ng gobyerno at tapatan ang serbisyong kanilang ginagawa para sa ating bayan,” diin pa ni Sotto.

Nakasaad sa panukala ang pagkakaroon ng basic compensation scheme para sa media workers, security of tenure o regularization sa lahat ng media workers, P500 kada araw na hazard pay sa mapanganib na coverages, at karagdagang insurance benefits.

Nais din ni Sotto na bumuo ng News Media Tripartite Council na bubuo ng mga polisiya para sa mga media workers.

“It is high time that we provide the media workers their well-deserved emoluments and protection under the law,” diin ni Sotto.

“The public’s need for quality, informative news can only be satisfied when our media workers feel safe and secure while in selfless pursuit of news and information,”dagdag pa ni Sotto. (DANG SAMSON-GARCIA)
