LALAHOK si Pangulong Rodrigo Roa Duterte sa Summit for Democracy na nakatakda sa Disyembre 9 hanggang 10 dahil na rin sa imbitasyon ni United States President Joseph Biden.

“President Duterte welcomes the opportunity to share the Philippine democratic experience and commitment to democratic values and nation-building at the Summit for Democracy,” ang nakasaad sa kalatas na ipinalabas ng the Office of the President (OP), nitong Martes.

Si Biden, sa kanyang imbitasyon para sa Summit for Democracy, ay nagpahayag na ang Washington ay magho-host ng inisyatiba “with humility and in the spirit of mutual learning.”

“We recognize and appreciate your partnership in working to build democratic and human-rights respecting societies that allow all citizens to thrive. In a moment of significant challenge and enormous opportunity, it is more important than ever for democracies to prove that we can deliver for the needs of our people,” ayon kay Biden sa kanyang imbitasyon na ipinahayag naman ng OP.

Isang hiwalay na kalatas naman ang ipinalabas ng US State Department na nagsasaad na ang Summit for Democracy para sa mga lider mula sa gobyerno, civil society, at pribadong sektor ay idaraos virtually sa gitna ng COVID-19 pandemic.

Nauna rito, sinabi ng US State Department na nagsagawa na ito ng konsultasyon sa mga eksperto mula sa gobyerno, multilateral organizations, philanthropies, civil society, at private sector “to solicit bold, practicable ideas around three key themes namely: defending against authoritarianism, addressing and fighting corruption and promoting respect for human rights.”

Matatandaang, pinagbigyan ng International Criminal Court (ICC) ang kahilingan ni Pangulong Duterte na ipagpaliban ang imbestigasyon sa drug war killings ng Philippine government sa panahon ng police operations para sa di umano’y crimes against humanity. (CHRISTIAN DALE)
