IPINAG-UTOS ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. sa Department of Health (DOH) na gawing prayoridad ang kampanya laban sa human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) at tuberculosis (TB) infections maliban sa COVID-19.

Dapat aniyang simulan ng gobyerno ang ‘refocusing” o muling pagtuon ng pansin sa general public health concerns habang tinutugunan ang pandemya.

“Let’s start refocusing again on the general public health concerns. Siyempre COVID has not come away. [We] still have to deal with it,” ang sinabi ng Pangulo sa mga opisyal ng DOH sa isang pulong sa Malakanyang.

“But let’s not deal with COVID-19 at the expense of all these other public health concerns,” dagdag na pahayag nito.

Sinabi ng OPS, sa nasabing miting, iniulat ni Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire sa Pangulo na ang TB ay muling lumitaw dahil sa “high transmissibility” nito.

Sinabi ni Vergeire na karaniwang tinatamaan ng sakit na TB ang mga tao mula sa “lower income bracket” ng lipunan.

Sinabi pa nito na marami pang multi-drug resistant TB cases dahil karamihan sa mga tao ay kaya at maaaring bumili ng anti-TB medicines “over the counter.”

“So, for example, they have prescriptions that will be given by doctors [to those] who just need them… medicines for just one, two months, they will not finish their medicines and they become resistant,” paliwanag ni Vergeire.

Sinabi pa ni Vergeire na “some patients receiving medicines from the government offer them to other people who have not consulted a doctor.”

Para tugunan ang kasalukuyang hamon, ang DOH ay nakipag-partner sa United States Agency for International Development (USAID) matapos itong mag-donate ng tool gamit ang artificial intelligence.

“We’re trying to go around the different provinces to do this. Hopefully, we get to reduce the number of cases,” dagdag na pahayag nito.

Para naman sa HIV, sinabi ni Vergeire na nakaabante ang DoH laban sa sakit bago pa ang COVID-19 pandemic subalit na- interrupt sa panahon ng pandemya dahil sa government-imposed restrictions.

“People were not able to go for screening, were not able to get their medicines because of the lockdowns, so what we did during the time of pandemic, we were already sending per individual or per patient ‘yung kanilang mga gamot through LBC para lang makainom sila ng gamot,” ayon kay Vergeire.

Sinabi pa ni Vergeire na nakikipagtulungan na sila sa mga mambabatas at judiciary para labanan ang stigma at diskriminasyon na pumipigil sa mga tao mula na makahingi ng medical attention kahit pa nakararanas ang mga ito ng sintomas ng HIV.

“So we’re working with the other sectors so that we can be able to make the services more accessible,” ang pahayag ni Vergeire.
