INANUNSYO ni President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. na pansamantala muna siyang uupo bilang agriculture secretary sa oras na mag-take over ang kanyang administrasyon sa Hunyo 30.

Ang anunsyong ito ni Marcos ay ilang linggo matapos magbabala ang Department of Agriculture ng food crisis sa second half ng 2022.

“We are spoke at length about the measures that we will have to take because we are forecasting that there will be a increase in food prices in the next quarters that will come because of the outside forces that’s impacting our food supply,” ayon kay Marcos.

Nauna rito, nagbabala si outgoing Agriculture Secretary William Dar noong nakaraang buwan ng nagbabadyang food crisis, dala ng epekto ng coronavirus pandemic sa ekonomiya, mataas na presyo ng langis at giyera sa pagitan ng Russia at Ukraine.

“Tayo naman…ay handa tayo…Itong second semester of the year. Nakikita na ninyo ang pagtaas ng presyo ng inputs, kaunti ang mabibili sa global market,” ayon kay Dar.

Sinusugan naman ni Agriculture undersecretary Fermin Adriano ang pahayag ni Dear sabay sabing “Philippines’ low food production and the ballooning population further contributed to the emerging problem.

“Sa dalawang dekada na yun. Tumataas lang, lumalago lang ang productivity nyan ng 1.1 percent napakababa talaga pero yung population natin lumalaki annually ng 1.4 [percent] kaya kulang na kulang ang production natin,” ayon kay Adriano.

Humirit naman ng mas maraming government funding si Dar para sa industriya, sinabi nito na ang agriculture sector ng bansa ay napabayaan sa nakalipas na ilang dekada.

“The government should boost funding given that the budget of agriculture stands at 1.5% of the country’s total funding, versus 3.5% to 6% in other countries,” ayon kay Dar.

“I can say emphatically agriculture for the last 40 years have been neglected, underbudgeted, underinvested,” dagdag na pahayag nito. (CHRISTIAN DALE)
