MATAPOS tanggapin ni “Presumptive Vice President” Sara Duterte ang hamong pamunuan ang Department of Education (DepEd), si House majority leader Martin Romualdez naman ang isinusulong na tumindig bilang House Speaker ng Kamara sa pagpasok ng 19th Congress sa Hunyo.

“In a consultation with the NUP Members of the House of Representatives it was unanimously agreed to endorse Rep.Romualdez as the Speaker for the coming Congress,” pahayag ni Reginald Velasco na tumatayong tagapagsalita ng National Unity Party.

Giit ni Velasco, higit na angkop na iluklok si Romualdez sa pinakamataas na pwesto sa Kamara dahil sa ipinamalas nitong husay ang angking liderato sa pagtatapos na 18th Congress.

“He has proven ability as a consensus builder for the different political parties in the House of Representatives,” ayon sa NUP na inaasahang magtatala ng pinakamaraming bilang sa pagbubukas ng 19th Congress sa Kamara.

Noong 2016, isa si Romualdez sa contender sa Speakership ng Kamara sa kasalukuyang 18th Congress subalit ibinigay ni outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte ang nasabing puwesto sa runningmate na si Taguig Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano.

Kahati ni Cayetano sa nasabing puwesto si outgoing Speaker Lord Allan Velasco habang si Romualdez ay itinalaga na lamang bilang Majority leader.

Nakatakdang magsara ang 18th Congress sa Hunyo 30, 2022 kung saan mamimili ng susunod na Speaker ang mga bagong halal na District Congressmen at maging ang mga party-list Representatives.

“This decision was arrived at in recognition of his exemplary service as Majority Leader of the 18th Congress and his proven ability as a consensus builder for the different political parties in the House of Representatives,” ayon pa kay Velasco.

Bukod sa NUP, itinuturing na malaking partido rin ang Nacionalista Party (NP), PDP-Laban, Lakas CMD na kinabibilangan ni Romualdez at National People’s Coalition (NPC).

Isa rin sa matunog sa Speakership ang kapartido ni Romualdez na si Pampanga Congresswoman-elect at dating Pangulong Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. (BERNARD TAGUINOD)
