MAY basbas ni Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ang pag-angkat ng asukal na hindi lalagpas sa 150,000 metric tons (MT) para tugunan ang kakapusan ng suplay at masawata ang tumataas na presyo nito sa bansa.

Ayon sa Sugar Order No. 2, naka-post sa Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) website, kalahati ng kabuuang import volume, o 75,000 MT, ay ilalaan sa industrial users o mga kompanya na gumagamit ng asukal sa kanilang manufacturing process, habang ang kalahati ay ibibigay sa mga consumer o sa pamilihan.

“After due consultation, the Stakeholders of the Sugar Industry have submitted their respective positions and letters of endorsement recognizing the need for an importation program for the crop year 2022 to 2023,” ang kautusan ay tinintahan ni Pangulong Marcos, Department of Agriculture at mga opisyal ng SRA noong Setyembre 13.

“After taking into consideration all comments, inputs, and information, the SRA deems it necessary to adopt additional, responsive, and pre-emptive measures to ensure domestic supply and manage sugar prices in order to achieve the foregoing policy declarations through timely government intervention by way of importation in order to maintain a balanced supply and demand of sugar for domestic consumption,” dagdag na pahayag ng SRA.

Sinabi pa ng SRA na magsisimula na silang tumanggap ng aplikasyon para sa importasyon ng asukal, tatlong araw matapos na maging epektibo ang naturang kautusan.

Bago pa ang Sugar Order No. 2, naharap sa kontrobersiya ang sugar importation matapos ipatigil ni Pangulong Marcos ang Sugar Order No. 4 ng SRA. (CHRISTIAN DALE)
