Breaking the ice from Shanghai to Boston: PH’s Gamez and Korovin earn ticket to world championship glory

Team Philippines once again impressed the world with outstanding performances on the ice at the prestigious International Skating Union (ISU) Four Continents Figure Skating Championships (4CC) in Shanghai, China.

The remarkable figure skating duo, Isabella Gamez and Alexander Korovin, secured the 11th position at the esteemed ISU 4CC held from January 30 to February 4 at the Shanghai Pudong Development (SPD) Bank Oriental Sports Center. Their impressive technical element scores, combining results from last year’s World Championships in Saitama, Japan, and the free skating event at the ISU 4CC, were 29.30 and 46.45 respectively, securing their place in the 2025 World Figure Skating Championship. This world championship stages a significant role in the qualification for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.

In addition to the remarkable achievements of Filipino talents at the esteemed ISU 4CC, Filipino-Canadian Edrian Celestino finished strong with a score of 180.31 points, ranking 18th in the men’s individual figure skating segment. Celestino had also competed in the ISU Challenger Series Autumn Classic, where he placed 10th in September 2023.

In the women’s individual figure skating segment, two-time Philippine national champion Sofia Frank placed 19th with 134.79 points. Frank is scheduled to compete next at the Jr. World Figure Skating Championship in Taipei, Taiwan, celebrating her 3rd year representing the Philippines.

Daughter of former Filipino beauty queen Precious Tongko, Sofia Frank ranks 19th out of 26 at the women’s individual figure skating. Frank qualifies to compete at the Jr. World Figure Skating Championships which she has been Philippine representative in event for 3 years now.
