NAGBABALA ang Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) ng potensyal na “major problems” sa suplay ng tubig kapag lumagpas ang El Niño phenomenon sa second quarter ng 2024.

“The water supply from Angat Dam and other sources can meet the demand “until around May or June of 2024,” ayon kay DENR Undersecretary Carlos Primo David.

Nagsu-suplay ang Angat Dam ng 90% ng potable water requirement sa Kalakhang Maynila.

“We’re trying to preserve it that way so that once we enter 2024, it’s at its maximum volume… If the El Niño event next year progresses, intensifies, and even extends further than June, then it will be a major problem for Metro Manila,” ayon kay David.

Maaari aniyang maranasan ng Kalakhang Maynila na maulit ang 2019 water crisis, kung saan ang mga residente ay nakapila sa mga rasyon ng tubig at ilang ospital ang mahaharap sa ilang araw na limitado o walang suplay ng tubig.

“We want to prevent that. Twenty-first century na. We should be better in terms of forecasting, better in terms of managing our resources,” ayon kay David.

Nauna nang sinabi ng state weather bureau PAGASA na may 65 lalawigan sa iba’t ibang panig ng bansa ang maaaring makaranas ng matinding tagtuyot habang anim na iba ang makararanas ng dry spell sa pagtatapos ng May 2024.
