HINILING ng mga mambabatas sa Mababang Kapulungan ng Kongreso sa mga kinauukulang ahensya ng gobyerno ang mga ulat na gumamit umano ng mga substandard na materyales tulad ng bakal ang ilang high-rise building.

Ginawa nina Negros Occidental Rep. Albee Benitiz at Quezon City Rep. Winston Castelo ang kautusan sa Department of Trade and Industry (DT) at Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) at  local government units (LGUs) matapos ang 6.1 magnitude na lindol sa Zambales kung saan naapektuhan ang Metro Manila.

“There should be a thorough evaluation of all high-rise buildings to ensure that these are structurally sound and are not at risk should a catastrophic earthquake hit us in the future,” ani Benitez, chair ng House committee on housing and urban development.

Ayon naman kay Castelo, kailangang kasuhan ang mga kontratista at may may-ari ng mga gusali na mapatutunayang gumamit ng mga substandard na bakal dahil inilalagay ng mga ito sa panganib ang buhay ng mga tao.

“We should seriously look on the use of substandard construction materials, especially steel products that were mislabeled,” ani Castelo, chair ng House committee on metro manila development.

“These products are a danger to life in our earthquake-prone country. In the event of a high magnitude earthquake, mislabeled and substandard steel materials can cause the foundations of buildings to crumble as they cannot withstand the pressure, and are not made for that type of building construction,” dagdag pa ni Castelo.

Ayon kay Engineer Roberto Cola, ng Philippine Iron and Steel Institute (PISI) tiniyak nito na dumaan sa pagsusuri ng DTI ang kalidad ng kanilang mga produktong bakal na ginagamit sa mga matataas na gusali.

Subalit ayon kay Benitez, kailangang tutukan ang mga produkto ng mg mga local steelmakers upang masiguro na pumasa ang ito sa international standard dahil dito nakasalalay ang tatag ng isang gusali pagdating ng lindol.
