NAGKASA ng imbestigasyon ang mga militanteng mambabatas sa Kamara upang matukoy ang pinag-uugatan ng pagsipa ng presyo ng sibuyas sa bansa na posibleng dahil umano sa manipulasyon ng mga negosyante at smuggler.

Sa House Resolution (HR) 673 na inakda ng Makabayan congressmen, inaatasan ng mga ito ang House committee on agriculture na ugatin ang dahilan kung bakit umabot sa P720 ang kada kilo ng sibuyas.

Nagsimulang tumaas ang presyo ng puting sibuyas noong October 2022 kung saan umaabot sa P300-P400 ang kada kilo nito at pagdating ng December ay P600 na ang presyo nito habang ang mga local red onion ay umabot sa P720 kada kilo.

“Based on news reports, the farmgate price of onions in mid-November 2022 was just P25 to P27 per kilogram. Despite the low farmgate price of onion, its retail price in markets and stores has continued to increase, ayon sa inihaing resolusyon nina Reps. Arlene Brosas, France Castro at Raoul Manuel.

“Such huge discrepancy indicates potential price manipulation which makes onions more expensive. Aside from that, smuggling and over-importation of onions remain major problems, which also severely affect local supply and prices,” dagdag pa ng mga ito.

Lumilitaw rin umano na 90% ang smuggled na sibuyas tulad ng 100,000 kilo ng white onion na nagkakahalaga ng P30 million at 50,000 kilo ng red onions na umaabot sa P20 million ang halaga.

Sa kabila nito, patuloy ang pagtaas ng presyo ng sibuyas.

Hindi rin umubra ang P170 kada kilo suggested retail price na itinakda ng Department of Agriculture (DA) na kalaunan ay itinaas sa P250 dahil masyado pa ring mababa ang presyo nito sa mga palengke.

“WHEREAS, there are reasons to believe that there is an ongoing control and manipulation of onion prices from farmgate to market retail by big traders who store onions in cold storage warehouses; large traders, importers, and even smugglers profit hugely from onions’ high prices, while consumers shell out more to purchase onions as a result, ” banggit pa sa resolusyon.
