NAGKAISA ang 41 mambabatas mula sa iba’t ibang partido sa Kamara para ihain ang House Resolution No. 1006 na humihiling ng malalimang imbestigasyon sa umano’y robbery-extortion activities ng Peanut Gallery Media Network o Peanut Gallery Media Network.
Ayon sa mga kongresista, may mga online platform umano na ginagamit para sa intimidasyon, coercion, disinformation at pangongolekta ng pera sa ilalim ng pagkukunwaring media o public commentary.
Natanggap na ng House Bills and Index Service ang resolusyon na humihiling sa House Committees on Public Order and Safety, Information and Communications Technology, at Public Information na magsagawa ng imbestigasyon.
Ayon kay Tingog Party-list Rep. Jude Acidre, malayo umano sa tunay na pamamahayag ang ginagawa ng PGMN.
“When a group allegedly prepares damaging material, holds it back and demands money in exchange for not releasing it, that is not journalism. That is extortion,” ani Acidre.
“Kaisa tayo ng bansa sa pagpapahalaga sa malayang pamamahayag. But PGMN is far from practicing real journalism. This resolution intends to expose PGMN’s alleged extortion activities and unmask it as a mere fake news peddler,” dagdag pa nito.
Kabilang sa mga naghain ng resolusyon sina Reps. Yedda Marie Romualdez, Jude Acidre, Marcelino Libanan at iba pang miyembro ng Lakas-CMD, National Unity Party at party-list bloc.
Nag-ugat ang panawagang imbestigasyon matapos maaresto ang founder ng PGMN na si Franco Mabanta at ilang kasamahan nito sa entrapment operation ng National Bureau of Investigation kaugnay ng umano’y P300 milyong extortion attempt laban kay dating House Speaker Martin Romualdez.
Nakasaad sa resolusyon na bagama’t protektado ng Konstitusyon ang freedom of speech at freedom of the press, hindi ito maaaring gamiting pananggalang sa mga krimen gaya ng robbery, extortion, grave threats, coercion at cybercrime.
Layon din ng imbestigasyon na alamin kung sumusunod ang PGMN sa mga batas hinggil sa registration, taxation, online monetization at digital platform activities.
Inaasahang ipatatawag ng Kamara ang mga opisyal ng PGMN, content creators, testigo, law enforcement officers, at mga kinatawan mula sa Department of Justice, National Bureau of Investigation, Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group at Bureau of Internal Revenue.
Target ng Kamara na makabuo ng mga bagong batas at regulasyon laban sa robbery extortion, cyber-enabled coercion, organized harassment at disinformation habang pinoprotektahan ang mga lehitimong mamamahayag at whistleblowers.
