MAGANDA ang layunin ng panukala sa Kongreso na tuluyang ipagbawal ang homework sa mga estudyante.

Gayunman, sa pananaw ng mga guro, ito ay pahirap sa kanila lalo ang ipapataw na parusang multa at pagkakulong.

“Both proposals promote physical, mental and psycho-social welfare of children and seek to provide more quality time for their family.  But, this is really alarming,” pahayag Benjo Basas, national chairperson ng Teachers Dignity Coalition.

“It seems that the legislature assumes the tasks and functions of DepEd and its teachers – curtailing our right to academic freedom.  Our teachers are trained.  We know the value of homework.
More than academics, homework teaches discipline, responsibility, continuity of learning and even time management. It may also strengthen family bonding- thus providing quality time for them with their parents and siblings. Homework is not intended to make life
difficult for our students,” diin Basas.

Base sa House Bill No. 3611 ni Sorsogon Representative Evelina Escudero, ipinagbabawal ang pagpapadala ng homework sa mga Kinder hanggang High School at magkakaroon ng locker ang kada bata para may paglagyan ng mga libro at iba pang gamit para hindi makuba ang mga bata sa pagdala ng mabigat habang itinatakda sa House Bill No. 3883 ni Quezon City Representative Alfred Vargas na ipagbawal ang homework kapag weekend lamang at ang lalabag na guro ay patawan ng multang P50,000 o pagkakulong ng hindi higit sa dalawang taon.

“We maintain the position that this (rule on homework) does not need any legislation. Instead it should be left for the DepEd to decide. Moreover, the provision that seeks to impose a penalty of fine or imprisonment to teachers requiring assignments during weekend is simply unacceptable. Our teachers now are suffering from low pay,
heavy workload and too many regulations,” diin pa Basas.

Bukod dito, noon pang 2010 sa panahon ni Education Secretary Armin Luistro, ipinagbawal ang weekend homework.

Dahil dito, hiniling ng grupo ng mga guro sa Kongreso na ibasura ang nasabing dalawang panukala.

Naiulat na pinaboran ni Education Sec. Leonor Briones ang nabanggit na hakbang dahil hindi naman totoong mga estudyante ang gumagawa ng homework kundi mga magulang at yaya.
