LUSOT na ng Senado ang panukala para sa pagkakaroon ng safe pathways para sa mga nais maglakad, magbisikleta o gumamit ng non-motorized vehicles.

Sa botong 23-0, inaprubahan ng Senado ang Senate Bill No. 1582 o ang proposed Safe Pathways Act na inakda ni Senador Pia Cayetano, chairperson ng Sustainable Development Goals, Innovation, and Futures Thinking.

Co-author din sa panukala sina Senators Francis Tolentino, Manny Pacquiao, Sonny Angara, Ronald Dela Rosa, Joel Villanueva, Grace Poe, Ramon Bong Revilla Jr., Richard Gordon, Cynthia Villar, Bong Go, Majority Leader Migz”Zubiri at Minority Leader Franklin Drilon.

Bilang isang health advocate at cyclist, naniniwala si Cayetano na malaking tulong ang panukala para sa promosyon ng multiple health benefits at pagandahin ang kalidad ng buhay ng mga Pinoy dahil mababawasan ang carbon emissions at paggamit ng energy resources.

“This is good news to the biking community, which has grown significantly during this time of COVID. More people are now using a bicycle to go to work and in their daily travels,” diin ni Cayetano.

“It is important that there is a network of bicycle lanes to ensure continuity through various localities, and the safety of bikers,” dagdag ng senador.

Alinsunod sa panukala, magkatuwang ang Department of Transportation (DOTr) at Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), kasama ang local government units (LGUs) sa pagtukoy at pagbuo ng mga bike lanes na konektado sa iba’t ibang destinasyon tulad ng medical facilities o groceries, schools, banks, at iba pang kahalintulad na lugar.

Minamandato rin sa panukala ang paglalagay ng parking spaces para sa mga bisikleta at non-motorized vehicles sa government offices, schools, places of work, at commercial establishments tulad ng malls, banks, at hospitals. (DANG SAMSON-GARCIA)
