PINANGUNAHAN nina Bureau of Customs Commissioner Ariel F. Nepomuceno at National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Atty. Melvin A. Matibag, ang inspeksyon sa P35.4 milyong halaga ng imported agricultural products na nasamsam sa sinalakay na cold storage facility sa Nueva Ecija.
Ang inilunsad na anti-smuggling operation ay nag-ugat sa ipinagkaloob na intelligence information ng NBI kaugnay sa umano’y agricultural smuggling at posibleng paglabag sa Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage at Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA).
Dahil sa nasabing intell report ay agad na kumilos ang Bureau of Customs–Intelligence Group (BOC-IG) at Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service–Manila International Container Port (CIIS-MICP), sa pakikipag ugnayan sa NBI at Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), at ipinatupad ang law enforcement operations sa nasabing cold storage facility.
Dito ay nadiskubre ang iba’t ibang imported agricultural products, kabilang ang 6,088 bags ng small yellow onions mula Holland, 1,080 bags ng big yellow onions mula sa China, 3,780 bags ng big red onions mula sa China, at 12,350 bags ng bawang mula rin sa China.
Umaabot sa P35,437,198.00 ang halaga ng nasamsam na agricultural products.
Nabatid na inisyuhan ng Warrant of Seizure and Detention ang mga produktong nasamsan dahil sa paglabag sa Section 224 ng CMTA.
Ang nasabing operasyon ay sumusuporta sa direktiba ni President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. na palakasin ang food security, pangalagaan ang agriculture sector, at tiyakin ang mahigpit na pagtalima sa customs and trade regulations.
Kaugnay nito, pinasimulan na ng NBI ang kanilang imbestigasyon laban sa mga importer at iba pang liable parties sa posibleng paglabag sa Anti-Agricultural Economic Sabotage Act.
“The BOC is also carrying out an internal investigation to determine whether any personnel may have been involved in the unlawful importation and movement of the seized goods,” ani Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno.
Sabi pa ni Commissioner Nepomuceno, “Hindi natin hahayaan na kumita ang mga smuggler habang nalulugi ang ating mga magsasaka at nilalagay sa alanganin ang food security ng bansa. This operation sends a clear message that the Bureau of Customs, together with our partner agencies, will continue to pursue those who undermine legitimate trade and exploit our agricultural industry.”
