Nakatanggap ang Bureau of Customs (BOC) ng ‘radiation detection equipment’ mula sa United States Department of Energy Nuc­lear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (US DOE NSDD) para makatulong sa pagpapalakas ng border protection at kaka­yanang pang-seguridad.

Ang US donation ay kinabibilangan ng 4 na Radioisotope Identification Device Radseeker CS at 2 Radiation Pagers na suporta para sa detection operations ng Megaports Radiation Detection System na ilalagay sa mga piling ports – tulad ng Port of Manila, Manila International Container Port at Port of Cebu.

Ang equipment ay akma sa kasalukuyang border security equipment at programs ng Bureau lalo na sa detection ng radiological at nuclear materials.

Inaasahan din na magpapalakas ito sa pagpapahusay ng kapabilidad ng Pilipinas lalo na sa monitoring at pag-protekta sa hangganan ng bansa laban sa pagpasok ng radioactive materials na gamit sa paggawa ng nuclear weapons.

Sa mensahe ni Customs Commissioner Rey Leonardo B. Guerrero, nagpasalamat siya sa US government para sa kanilang ‘logistical support’ sa BOC patungo sa pagpapabuti ng kanilang ‘trade control systems and border security measures’.

Ang ceremonial turn over ay dinaluhan nina Economic Counselor for US Embassy Manila, Mr. David Gamble; Deputy Economic Counselor, Ms. Zeenat Syed; at Economic Officer, Mr. Douglas Fowler.

Kasama rin sa nakiisa ang iba pang BOC officials na sina Enforcement Group (EG) Deputy Commissioner Teddy Sandy Raval, Intelligence Group (IG) Deputy Commissioner Raniel T. Ramiro and Enforcement and Security Service (ESS) Director Yogi Filemon Ruiz. (Jo Calim)
