TINIYAK ni Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano na agad aaksyunan ng Senado ang Articles of Impeachment laban kay Vice President Sara Duterte at susundin umano nila ang itinatakda ng Konstitusyon.
“There won’t be delays,” sabi ni Cayetano sa panayam sa mga mamamahayag.
“We will do what has to be done. Judge us by our actions,” dagdag nito.
Nang tanungin kung agad bang magco-convene ang Senado bilang impeachment court sa oras na matanggap ang Articles of Impeachment, diretsahang sumagot si Cayetano ng “Forthwith.”
Ayon kay Cayetano, tuloy-tuloy ang konsultasyon ng liderato ng Senado sa mga senador at maging sa mga dating opisyal ng Mataas na Kapulungan upang matiyak ang maayos na pagtakbo ng proseso.
“I also consulted former Senate President Tito Sotto. The guidance was to follow the process and refer the matter appropriately through the Committee on Rules. We will follow the law and the rules of the Senate,” ani Cayetano.
Binigyang-diin din nito na mahalagang mapagtuunan ng seryosong pansin ang impeachment bilang bahagi ng accountability process ngunit hindi rin dapat mapabayaan ang iba pang usaping pambansa partikular ang mga hamon sa ekonomiya.
“We cannot focus only on impeachment because there are many pressing economic challenges facing the country,” ayon kay Cayetano.
“But this is an important accountability process, and we will give it the full attention it deserves,” dagdag pa nito.
Sinabi rin ni Cayetano na mahalaga ang collective decision-making sa Senado kaya plano nitong magpatawag ng caucus upang mapag-usapan ng lahat ng senador ang mga susunod na hakbang.
“This will not be the decision of only one committee or one person,” ani Cayetano.
Muli rin nitong iginiit ang kahalagahan ng rule of law at due process sa lahat ng aksyon ng pamahalaan.
“We are lawmakers, not lawbreakers. The Philippines is a nation of laws, not of men,” wika nito.
