Employees from Manila Water’s East Zone and Non-East Zone operations participate in the International Coastal Cleanup 2026 at Manila Bay’s Dolomite Beach, one of the 11 designated cleanup sites across Metro Manila. The activity gathered nearly 37,000 volunteers and resulted in the collection of more than 168,000 kilograms of waste.
Manila Water employees from its East Zone and Non-East Zone operations joined thousands of volunteers at the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) 2026 held at Manila Bay’s Dolomite Beach on September 19, 2026.
Organized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-National Capital Region (DENR-NCR), the annual cleanup mobilized 36,897 volunteers from private companies, non-government organizations, academic institutions, and government agencies. According to DENR-NCR, the initiative collected a total of 168,395 kilograms of waste from cleanup sites across Metro Manila.
As part of its support for the event, Manila Water set up a hydration station to provide volunteers with drinking water and help prevent heat-related risks during the cleanup.
For Manila Water, participation in the International Coastal Cleanup reflects its broader commitment to protecting water resources through both community engagement and sustained investments in sanitation infrastructure.
“Protecting waterways requires collective action from communities, businesses, and government organizations. Through initiatives such as the International Coastal Cleanup, we are able to contribute directly to environmental stewardship while reinforcing the importance of proper sanitation, wastewater treatment, and responsible waste management in safeguarding our rivers, esteros, and coastal areas,” said Dittie Galang, Manila Water Corporate Communications Group Head.
Beyond volunteer activities, Manila Water continues to advance wastewater management programs that help improve river and coastal water quality. Among its recent projects are the 60-million-liter-per-day Aglipay Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Mandaluyong City and the 16-million-liter-per-day Hinulugang Taktak STP in Antipolo City. These facilities ensure that wastewater collected from households and establishments undergoes stringent treatment processes before being safely discharged into receiving bodies of water.
The company also actively promotes its monthly desludging program in partner barangays, encouraging customers to avail of the service as a proactive measure to protect community health and help keep waterways cleaner. Regular desludging prevents the buildup of untreated wastewater in septic tanks and supports improved sanitation conditions in communities.
Manila Water has consistently supported the International Coastal Cleanup as part of its efforts to promote environmental sustainability and complement the national government’s programs for the protection and rehabilitation of waterways.
