NAGPAABOT ng pakikidalamhati ang Malakanyang sa pagpanaw ng veteran constitutionalist na si Father Joaquin Bernas sa edad na 88.

“We express our condolences to the friends and colleagues of Father Joaquin Bernas who died early morning today, March 6, 2021,” ayon kay Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque.

Si Father Bernas ay Dean Emeritus ng Ateneo de Manila University School of Law na nag-iwan ng “legacy of legal excellence and passion for humanity and the rule of law to the nation.”

Isa aniya itong magaling na Jesuit educator, tinuruan nito ang ilang henerasyon ng mga estudyanteng Pilipino, abogado, legal academics at researchers.

Si Father Bernas ay isa sa mga bumalangkas ng 1987 Philippine Constitution kung saan ang interpretasyon ng batas ay makikita at nababanggit sa maraming legal arguments.

“May his soul, through the mercy of God, rest in eternal peace and happiness,” ayon sa kalihim.

Iniulat ang pagpanaw ni Fr. Bernas sa Facebook post ni Jose Maria Hofileña, dean ng Ateneo Law School, gayunman hindi nito tinukoy ang sanhi ng pagpanaw ng Jesuit lawyer.

Ayon kay Veritas Pilipinas anchor priest Fr. Emmanuel Alfonso, SJ-executive director ng Jesuit Communications, pumanaw si Fr. Bernas ala-1:45 ng madaling araw sa Jesuit residence sa Ateneo.

Si Fr. Bernas ay una na ring na-confine sa The Medical City at lumabas ng pagamutan noong March 4, matapos ang anim na linggo dahil na rin sa ‘impeksyon’.

Base sa inilabas na memo ng Jesuit, “Fr. Joaquin Bernas was discharged from The Medical City March 4 evening and arrived at the Jesuit Health and Wellness Center. Fr. Bernie has been diagnosed with an infection that will need about six weeks of treatment.”

“Yan yung memo kahapon. Tapos kaninang maaga, namatay na,” ayon kay Fr. Alfonso.
