PINAGHIHINAY-HINAY ng isang mambabatas sa Kamara ang Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) sa desisyon nitong alisin sa national team si Tokyo Olympian at World’s number 6 pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena.

“We do not treat a world class Filipino athlete like that,” ani Deputy Speaker Eric Martinez.

Nag-ugat ang hidwaan ng PATAFA na pinamumunuan ni Philip Ella Juico at Obiena sa kabiguan umano ng huli na bayaran ang kanyang coach na si Vitaly Petrov.

Bukod dito, inakusahan din si Obiena ng falsification of liquidation documents.

Matapos ang imbestigasyon ng PATAFA, inirekomendang tanggalin sa national team si Obiena.

“We should not jump to conclusions right away without a hint of due process involve in resolving this issue,” ayon sa mambabatas na nagsabing “future of the Philippine athlete” si Obiena.

Iginiit ni Martinez na nagbigay na ng statement si Petrov na nag-aabswelto sa anomang obligasyon ni Obiena hinggil sa coaching fees kaya walang dahilan para tanggalin ito sa national team.

“The highly-respected Ukrainian coach even mentioned that he did not initiate any complaint against Obiena and understands that the delay on the release of his coaching fees is not the pole vaulter’s responsibility,” ayon pa sa dating chairman ng House committee on youth and sport development.
