MAIDEDEPENSA na ni world-ranked pole vaulter Ernest John ‘EJ” Obiena ang kanyang SEA Games title.
Sa special meeting kahapon, pinatawan ng 90-day suspension ng Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) Executive Board ang Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) at maging ang Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA).
Bunga nito, makakalahok si Obiena sa 31st Southeast Asian Games sa Vietnam sa Mayo, kung saan siya ang defending champion.
Sinuspinde ang PHILTA, ayon sa POC, bunga nang ‘non-compliance’ sa atas mula sa International Tennis Federation (ITF) na i-amend ang charter nito at magsagawa ng fresh elections upang makapili ng ‘truly representative set of board members.’
Pinatawan ang PHILTA ng two-year suspension ng ITF bago matapos ang 2020 at maaaring ma-extend ang nasabing sanksyon hangga’t hindi nakakasunod ang nasabing NSA sa nais ng world tennis body.
Habang ang PATAFA, ayon kay POC Prexy Bambol Tolentino, ay suspendido bunga sa pagkabigong maisagawa ang layunin ng isang NSA: “Dedication and commitment toward the development of the sport, promoting the ideals of the Olympic Movement and the spirit of sportsmanship.”
Giit ng POC chief: “Our constitution states that POC may suspend for any reason. However, it’s transparent that PATAFA has deliberately and intentionally disregarded our basic principles of promoting sports and development.”
Idagdag pa niya ang hindi pag-eendorso ng PATAFA kay Obiena para makalahok sa world indoor championship na magsisimula sa Biyernes (Marso 18) sa Belgrade, maging sa Vietnam SEA Games, Eugene (Oregon) world championships sa Hulyo at Asian Games sa Hangzhou sa Setyembre.
“Unfortunately, the non-endorsement of EJ has created a national issue,” wika ni Tolentino. “EJ Obiena, under our International Olympic Committee Charter has two reasons to be endorsed — sports merit and inspiration to the youth.”
Sa halip, ayon sa POC prexy, mas pinairal ng PATAFA ang ‘pride’ sa kabila
ng sinserong paghahangad ni Obiena na bigyang karangalan ang bansa.
“PATAFA prioritized its pride, and it saddens [me] to look closely on a chance slowly gripping away. They have withheld an opportunity of the Filipino people to have another world record.”
Epektibo ang 90 days suspension at ira-ratify ng POC General Assembly sa regular meeting nito sa Marso 30. Sa sandaling mapagtibay, wala nang otoridad ang PATAFA sa national athletics team para sa SEA Games, na magbibigay-daan kay Obiena para maidepensa ang kanyang gold medal sa Vietnam.
Ayon pa sa POC, agad madidismis o mapapawalang bisa ang suspensyon kung: “If PHILTA complies with the ITF order, and the ITF accepts PHILTA’s compliance, the suspension of the tennis association will be lifted immediately.”
Para sa PATAFA: “If the PSC’s mediation effort over PATAFA and EJ [Obiena] is completed and ironed out, its suspension will also be lifted.”
Dahil sa suspensyon, may direct supervision ang POC sa PHILTA at PATAFA’s national athletes, kasama si Obiena, coaches at sporting officials, habang ang Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) ang mamamahala sa financial matters.
Siyam na miyembro ng board ang bumoto sa suspensyon, habang ang dalawa, Charlie Ho (netball) at Cynthia Carrion-Norton (gymnastics) ay nag-abstain. Absent naman sina POC Chairman Steve Hontiveros at IOC Representative to the Philippines Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski sa special board meeting.
