INAPRUBAHAN ng Senado ang resolution para busisiin ng Committee of the Whole ang food security crisis sa bansa dahil sa African swine fever (ASF) problem.

Sa plenary session, nagpasya ang mga senador na iadopt ang Senate Resolution 685 para imbestigahan ng Committee of the Whole ang mga alegasyon ng “tongpats” sa pork imports mula sa mga mapagsamantalang indibidwal sa loob ng Department of Agriculture (DA) na umaabot sa P6 bilyon.

Sa impormasyon ni Senador Panfilo Lacson, nasa P5 hanggang P7 bawat kilo ang patong sa pork import sa kasalukuyang importation set-up.

“If there is really truth to the report that I received that P5 to P7 per kilogram of pork, if the volume is increased to 400,000 MT and the so-called tongpats will double up, that would translate to P6 billion at P15 per kilogram,” saad ni Lacson.

“In fact the source that gave me the information even assumed that P20 would be the amount that he estimates if we increase the volume to 400,000 MT at a lower tariff rate of 5%. As it is now, the importers are already having good margins of profit. If we lower the tariff rates and at the same time increase the volume, you can just imagine,” dagdag pa nito.

Kinuwestyon din ni Lacson ang biglaang reshuffle ng mga opisyal sa loob ng Department of Agriculture partikular ang paglilipat kay dating Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) director Ronnie Domingo sa Philippine Carabao Center.

Sinabi ng sneador na sa ilalim ng liderato ni Domingo sa BAI nang ipalabas ang phytosanitary permits kaya nakapasok ang pork imports mula sa ASF-infected countries tulad ng Belgium, Hungary, Germany, at China.

“We would like to find out from Agriculture Secretary William Dar what triggered the sudden reshuffle,” Lacson said. (DANG SAMSON-GARCIA)
