TINIYAK ni Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto ang pondo ng gobyerno para sa pag-aaral ng 44,475 science scholars sa susunod na taon kabilang na ang 1,927 para sa PhD at 4,264 sa Masters programs, bilang bahagi ng ‘national talent pool’ na kailangan ng bansa.

Binigyang-diin naman ni Recto na ang P7.4 billion na halaga ng tuition, libro, travel, living at iba pang allowances ng mga scholars, kabilang ang operasyon ng Philippine Science High School (PSHS) at Science Education Institute (SEI) ay hindi dapat ituring na gastos at sa halip ay investment na inaasahang magkakaroon ng malaking balik sa Pilipinas.

Nakapaloob ang nasa 1/3 ng P20 bilyong pondo sa susunod na taon ng Department of Science and Technology (DOST) na namamahala sa ‘menu of scholarships’.

Kasama sa 6,191 doctorate at masteral students ay ang 28,900 undergraduate students at 9,384 students sa 16 na campus ng PSHS System.

“So this program covers high school education to the highest degree available,” saad ni Recto.

“This is so because we can only ‘science our way to the future.’ The problems we confront today, from health, to agriculture, to traffic, can only have science-based solutions,” paliwanag pa ni Recto.

“We have to train the knowledge workers who will fix these, and the ones that would come after, including existential challenges, like climate change,” dagdag nito.

“Marami na tayong political scientists, pero kakaunti ang nasa data science. May surplus na ng government administrators, pero ICT systems administrators kulang tayo,” giit pa ng mambabatas.

Ang scholarship ng DOST ay hiwalay pa sa iba pang government tertiary education na nakapaloob naman sa Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education.
