HINDI lang kalawang ang delikado sa bakal.

Kapag substandard ang ginamit sa bahay, gusali, paaralan, ospital o tulay, hindi lang pera ang nakataya kundi mismong buhay.

Kaya mariing nagbabala si dating Surigao del Norte Rep. Ace Barbers sa publiko, contractors, developers at hardware suppliers laban sa pagbili at paggamit ng steel bars na umano’y ginawa ng Davao Mighty Steel Corporation (DMSC), kasunod ng operasyon ng mga awtoridad sa planta nito sa Barangay Ilang, Bunawan District, Davao City.

“Steel is not an ordinary commodity. It is the backbone of buildings, bridges, schools, hospitals, and other critical infrastructure. Every Filipino family has the right to expect that the materials used in these structures comply with the highest safety standards,” ani Barbers.

Ito ang dapat tandaan: ang bakal na nakatago sa loob ng konkreto ay maaaring hindi nakikita, pero kapag pumalya, maaaring maging nakamamatay.

Ayon sa mga ulat, isang joint operation ng National Bureau of Investigation at Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission ang humantong sa pagkakaaresto sa 10 Chinese nationals at pagsagip sa mahigit 100 Filipino workers na umano’y nalantad sa hazardous radioactive materials sa loob ng pasilidad.

Hindi pa ito nangangahulugang napatunayang may kasalanan ang DMSC o ang mga naaresto.

Ngunit ang mga alegasyon ay sapat para sa isang malalim, siyentipiko at walang kinikilingang imbestigasyon.

Lalo itong dapat tutukan dahil binanggit ni Barbers ang umano’y pagkakatulad ng operasyon ng DMSC at Philippine Sanjia Steel Corporation na na-raid sa PHIVIDEC Industrial Estate sa Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.

Pareho umanong gumagamit ng electric arc furnace technology, lokal at imported na scrap metal, Chinese technical personnel at gumagawa ng reinforcing steel bars.

“These similarities warrant a thorough examination of whether the cases are isolated incidents or part of a broader pattern that deserves closer scrutiny,” puna ni Barbers.

Kung mapatutunayang may substandard steel products na nakapasok sa merkado, ibang usapan na ito.

Hindi na lamang ito tungkol sa negosyo o paglabag sa regulasyon. Maaari itong maging usapin ng kaligtasan ng bawat pamilyang nakatira sa isang bahay o gusaling may ganoong bakal.

“If these allegations are confirmed through scientific testing and due process, the implications go far beyond defective construction materials. They raise serious concerns about public safety, worker welfare, environmental protection, and the integrity of our regulatory system,” dagdag ni Barbers.

Pero may isa pang mahalagang punto si Barbers: due process.

“Those who were arrested are entitled to the full protection of the law and the presumption of innocence. Investigators, on the other hand, must be allowed to pursue the facts without interference or undue pressure. The evidence should ultimately determine accountability,” diin ni Barbers.

Kaya dapat magtulungan ang NBI, PAOCC, Philippine Nuclear Research Institute, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Labor and Employment at iba pang ahensya.

Sa contractors, developers, suppliers at government procuring entities, malinaw ang mensahe: suriin ang bakal bago gamitin.

“Protecting lives must always come before profit,” panawagan ni Barbers.

At tama ang dating kongresista na laging protektahan ang kapakanan ng taumbayan.

Hindi ang makasariling interes ng iilan.
