KASUNOD ng pangako ni Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso, sinimulan na ang konstruksiyon ng kauna-unahang Muslim Cemetery sa Manila South Cemetery na sakop ng Makati City.
Aabot sa P49.3 milyon ang pondong inilaan para sa konstruksiyon ng sementeryo na umukupa sa 2,400 square meter na lupain.
Isinagawa nitong Huwebes ng umaga ang groundbreaking ceremony para sa panimula ng konstruksyon ng nasabing sementeryo.
Kabilang na itatayo ang isang Cultural Hall for Muslims.
Ang bagong sementeryo ay magsisilbing ekslusibong libingan para sa mga namamatay na Muslim sa Maynila.
Ayon sa alkalde, ang itatayong sementeryo ay isang importanteng kontribusyon sa kasaysayan at kultura ng mga Muslim sa bansa.
“Muslims brought greatness to us even before the Spaniards reached our shores. We were then the “Land of Rajahs” because rajahs ruled then the Kingdom of Manila, specifically the Rajah Sulayman Dynasty,” ayon kay Moreno.
“Why is it important to discuss the role of Rajah Sulayman in the history of Manila? It is to show that there is a need to give due recognition to the Muslims in the development of our city as it was them who founded and made great the Kingdom of Maynila before the Spanish conquest,” dagdag pa ng alkalde.
